Getting in

Engineering is gated at school-subject level more tightly than almost any other degree, and the gate closes early — by the time you pick at 16, some doors are already shut. Select what you are taking and see which of the 21 disciplines stay open.

Departments with genuine strength in each discipline, for the region you have selected. Reputation is not the same as fit — a mid-ranked department with the right specialism, placement year, or industry links will often serve you better than a famous name teaching the subject you did not want.

A bachelor’s is not the end of the map. A well-chosen master’s is the standard way engineers change lane — into AI, into finance, into a specialism that pays more — or go deeper in the field they already have. These are the routes that recruiters actually recognise, each tagged with the disciplines it follows naturally from. The exception is the MBA: take it after a few years working, not straight from graduation, or you waste most of its value.

Every number on this page describes the market. None of them describe you. This weighs the same data against what you actually want out of the work — and it will sometimes point away from the highest-scoring field, which is the point.
